We handle the rentals for Calgary Harley-Davidson during the summer which limits our riding time in beautiful western Canada. We get most of our riding in the winter when we take our 5th wheel toy hauler south with a couple of bikes. Marion rides a Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail and Bill rides a StreetGlide Special.
Our favourite ride is the “sidewinder”, a stretch of old Route 66 between Oatman and Cool Springs, AZ. There are 191 curves in 8 miles with some steep drop offs with no guardrails to add to the adventure.
Oatman is a cool old mining town where the burros wander throughout the streets. They are the ancestors of the burros that were released into the desert when the mines shut down in the 1930’s. Local volunteers act out gunfights in the main street a few times a day, collecting donations for charity.
Cool Springs is a great spot to stop. It was the inspiration for the animated movie “Cars” and featured in the Jean-Claude Van Damme movie, “Universal Soldier”. Go on a day other than Monday or Tuesday to be sure to meet Crazy Ray. He is a great story teller and has a wealth of knowledge of the area.
