A Study of P.M.S. part 4

In recent blogs I’ve identified three key ways that riding a motorcycle is beneficial for your health; increased brain activity, improved mental health and enhanced core strength. The hope has been that a better understanding of the physiological affects motorcycling has on us may better prepare us to cope with and combat Parked Motorcycle Syndrome, otherwise known as P.M.S. There is a fourth physical benefit to riding though and its motorcycling’s ability to burn calories! 

Depending on the type of riding you do as well as your overall physical condition you could find yourself burning as many as 600 calories per hour! Clearly your daily commuter ride is (I hope) a not-so-strenuous ride and as such you can expect to burn in the neighborhood of 170 calories per hour. But should you find yourself ripping your dirt bike around the motocross track for an hour you’ll get much closer to that 600 calories an hour mark. In fact, motocross racing is widely considered among the most physically demanding sports in the world! 

For many of us though, motorcycling is a social activity. We’ve all been on countless group rides that invariably end up at your favorite watering hole for a cold drink and plate of wings! It’s unlikely that the vast majority of motorcycle riders make the decision to ride as an alternative to the gym. All things in moderation I guess.  

So there you have it, a breakdown on the physiological and biological effects that riding a motorcycle has on us. In an effort to battle P.M.S. find an activity that offers similar effects. Something that’ll give you that same euphoric sensation you feel after a ride. For those of us that ride we can all agree that there is nothing like riding a motorcycle but maybe, just maybe we can get something close.
